Social gathering book festival - Sunday 4th July from 4pm

To celebrate the publication of The Paper Lantern, join us on Sunday July 4th for the inaugural Sunday Social Gathering Book Festival at the King and Queen.

To help launch Will Burns' debut novel, set in a village pub, which eagle-eyed readers may spot bears more than a passing similarity to your own humble local, we have arranged a one-day book festival with author events, poetry readings, a bookstall and a few special bits on the bar too.

Featuring live poetry from Martha Sprackland, a reading from master of the short story Anna Wood, and a Q and A event with Will Burns and fellow Wendover native and award-winning author Jake Arnott.

Events will run from 4-7, with plenty of time afterwards to raise a glass to two.

We’re very pleased to welcome Our Bookshop in Tring to the pub for the day, who will be selling books and they’ve even made an easy pre-order link to buy Will’s book and collect it on the day.

Indoor Opening

It seems at the moment that we are heading towards the government targets and that pubs and restaurants will be allowed to open indoors from May 17th. Whilst we do not know exactly what the rules will be if this happens, we thought we’d let you know how things will work at the pub if it all falls into place. We will be open on that Monday, throughout the day and we would suggest that you book a table, as demand will be high. Our kitchen will not be open that day, but will re-open on Tuesday 18th May. From the 18th onward we will no longer take bookings for drinking tables, returning to more traditional customs. You can of course book a table to eat. Once again, we’re not quite sure exactly what our opening hours will be, but apart from that first Monday (and subsequent Bank Holidays) we will not be open on Mondays. Look out for more details over the couple of weeks.

THE GLORIOUS 12TH

Not that we in any way either endorse or decry the shooting of game (carefully sitting on the fence here!). We thought this was a suitable title and image for what everyone hopes will be a fantastic day. We will only be open for outside service (tables of up to 6 or two family groups) from April 12th to May 16th. Our kitchen will not be open until May 18th. We will have some great street food offers in the car park each weekend on Fridays (4.30-9pm), Saturdays (1-9pm and Sundays 12-5pm). Also on the Mayday Monday 3rd May (1-9pm). Sign up to our newsletter and we’ll be sending out an email about exactly what will be on offer. It’s vital that you book a table in advance (phone or email) to be sure you can drink with us, as you must be seated and will not be able to go to the bar. Our hours and contact details can be found on the location page. We hope to see you soon!

APRIL 2021 RE-OPENING

In line with the current government “roadmap” we hope to be open for outdoor service from Monday April 12th. It’s likely that our kitchen will not be open initially, but we are hoping to have some tasty street food type offers over the weekends. We’ll keep you posted on the kitchen re-opening, but it will definitely be open when inside service resumes on May 17th. We’re not sure exactly what our regular opening hours will be yet, but we will definitely be open for the full week of 12th-19th April. Please ring us on 01296 696872, or email thekingandqueenwendover@gmail.com to book a table. YOU MUST BE SEATED AT TABLE TO BE SERVED - DON’T ASSUME YOU’LL BE ABLE TO GET A TABLE WITHOUT A BOOKING!
