A lot of songs can claim to have zapped the punk Zeitgeist as 1977 blurred into 1978, but few did the job as well as "Hippy's Graveyard," the second single by Johnny G, a wonderfully eccentric singer/songwriter who emerged along much the same lines as Patrick Fitzgerald, but with an even more endearing edge. Johnny G's first band of note was the early-'70s act Johnny G and The Claimants, although he was already solo by the time his first single was self-released in 1972. Signed by Beggars Banquet in late 1977, at the end of the year he became the first artist outside of The Lurkers to have a single released on the label, the wonderfully un-PC "Call Me Bwana!" "Hippy's Graveyard" followed, alongside an excellent album, Sharp & Natural, G Beat followed in 1979. John has released several albums since then and continues to tour.
Once again it's time for our annual South X South street event. Join us a fantastic range of guest ales and ciders and BBQ food to keep you going throughout the day. There will be live music on both Saturday and Sunday, featuring some local bands you haven't see at the K&Q to date, plus some old favourites.
On Saturday we kick off the music at around 1pm, with some half hour sets from local solo artists (Will Burns, Matt Wallace, John George Cooper, Adrian Dolemore, Lotty Dollman). Expect the unexpected. At around 4pm we have a couple of sets from Wendover based ELEMENTAL JOE, fronted by Nick Dutton. The at 7pm we're delighted that the wonderful EAST LONESOME DRIFTERS return to the K&Q for a another rousing couple of sets of the best barroom honky tonk this side of the pond.
On Sunday, we'll get underway again at around 1pm again with a couple more soloists, including our great friend ADAM KILLIP. Then at about 2pm a set from Wendover's THE GILLYBILLIES. At 3pm music from HOI POLLOI (Wendover's Simon & Tim Taylor). Then winding things up from 6pm the return of BOB COLLUM & MARTIN BELLMONT (assisted by Mags on violin).
